The Mercedes-Benz 280SL ‘Pagoda’ (W113) was introduced in December 1967 and remained in production until February 1971 before being replaced by its successor, the all-new and significantly heavier R107 350SL.
Over the years, the W113 quietly evolved from an agile ‘sports car’ into a comfortable ‘Grand Tourer’.
Usually equipped with a four-speed automatic or manual transmission, the latest evolution of the Pagoda was the 280SL, launched in November 1967 with a host of technical improvements.
It is now regarded as the most refined iteration of the W113 series, with its robust new seven-stage 2778cc M130 engine producing 170bhp perfectly matched to the automatic gearbox.
By the time production ceased in March 1971, some 23,885 had been built, making the 280SL the most popular of all W113 variants.
The model shown was delivered new in the USA, and retained its distinctive front lights after being imported into Europe.
This is a car that is used regularly and is not afraid of long journeys.
The current owner has driven the car many, many kilometers and has always kept it in perfect condition.
Our survey showed some minor defects in the appearance of the paintwork, but nothing surprising for a car that was painted several years ago and used very regularly.
the interior, upholstered in Cartier red leather, has a magnificent patina, the seats are perfectly supportive, and the original white steering wheel, like the rest of the interior, has a very nice patina.
The alignment of the body panels is entirely satisfactory, the engine work very well, the automatic gearbox shifts very smoothly, the brakes and drive trains are equally satisfactory.
It’s a pleasure to drive for miles, we’d like it to never end.
The “Pagoda” 280 SL is the quintessential member of the Mercedes-Benz SL family. Backed by a gearbox perfectly matched to the 6-cylinder engine of legendary reliability, it will be the perfect companion for your travels.
