Introduced in 1952, the Austin-Healey 100 marked the beginning of a line of British sports cars that would become truly iconic. As the first member of the “Big Healey” family, it earned its name from its ability to reach 100 mph. Although it differs from its successors by virtue of its four-cylinder engine, it possesses the character, styling and road manners that would establish the marque’s reputation.
Developed around the 2.6-litre Austin A90 engine, the 100 combines generous power with a design focused on driving enjoyment. The first series, the BN1, was produced in approximately 10,000 examples and featured a three-speed gearbox. It was succeeded by the BN2, equipped with a four-speed gearbox, of which approximately 4,600 examples were built. In response to growing demand for greater performance, Austin-Healey also introduced the 100 M, an uprated version of which just 1,159 examples were produced.
During the car’s comprehensive restoration, we chose to go well beyond the original specifications, developing both the engine and running gear to deliver performance exceeding that of a standard Austin-Healey 100 M. The car comes with an exceptionally comprehensive history file, including an extensive collection of photographs and invoices documenting the work carried out.
The engine has undergone extensive development, including a Weslake aluminium cylinder head with larger valves, Cosworth pistons, a forged crankshaft, Carrillo connecting rods, a performance camshaft and a lightweight valve train. The lubrication system, intake and exhaust have also been upgraded. The drivetrain has been comprehensively renewed, with a brand-new gearbox and overdrive, as well as a completely new rear axle.
The running gear has been upgraded with sports suspension, uprated shock absorbers, a larger anti-roll bar and improved braking components, complemented by Avon ZZ tyres. Equipment includes an aluminium louvred bonnet, leather upholstery, bespoke side screens and a made-to-measure hood, together with instruments suited to spirited driving and historic rallies.
The mechanical components have covered approximately 10,000 kilometres since their overhaul. The car is in perfect working order and delivers an exceptionally high level of performance while retaining the authentic character of a true Big Healey. A carefully restored and extensively developed Austin-Healey, offering a compelling proposition for the enthusiast seeking a classic British sports car that combines outstanding performance with timeless appeal.
